What Is Kief, How To Make It And Consume It?

Estimated 4-minute read

Ah, kief. One of the cleanest extracts that cannabis enthusiasts use to give their flower bud or favorite edible a nice, extra kick. If you’re willing to take your cannabis experience to a higher level, kief might just be the answer for you.

In this article, we’ll discover what kief is, how to collect it, and how to use it.

What is kief?

Kief, also known as hash, is a powerful concentrate made up of cannabinoids.

WikiLeaf points out that cannabinoids are a class of naturally occurring compounds found in both the human body and in the cannabis plant. Weed’s cannabinoids interact with our own endocannabinoid system, a biological system made up of endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

Cannabis contains the cannabinoid THCA; when heated or decarboxylated, it transforms into THC, the famous compound that makes you high.

How to collect kief

Kief is safe to consume and easier to extract if you have the right grinder at hand. If you do, you’re ready to go.

The way you collect kief is by simply grinding the buds because the cannabinoid trichomes will fall through the bottom chamber of your grinder. And that’s pretty much it since you don’t have to extract it or put it through solvents.

However, here are three important things you’ll find helpful:

Buy the perfect grinder for collecting kief.

Since some grinders include multiple chambers made to collect the trichomes, whenever you clean your device, you can access that chamber and collect the kief that you’ve been storing from grinding.

KLIP slices your flower bud perfectly instead of just grinding it as a regular device does, it has a lifetime warranty, and the device is easily assembled because it's made up with magnets. Definitely worth checking it out.

Freeze the flower bud and grinder before grinding.

WikiLeaf suggests that you freeze the bud along with your grinder. When cannabis freezes, its trichomes become very brittle, making it easier to snap off during the grinding process. It’s very simple: just place your grinder already loaded with weed in the freezer for 10 minutes, then grind as usual.

Make a kief box

Kief boxes or pollen boxes are incredible devices for extracting kief from your cannabis bud. I know I said KLIP is the best grinder for collecting kief (and it is), but if you want a more pure and consistent product, the pollen box is for you.

As stated before in an article, when you slice your cannabis buds with your grinder, plant matter can also make its way through the grinder screen that separates the grinding chamber from the kief collector chamber. As a result, you will end up with a lower quality kief, so this is why it is better to get a kief box to extract the kief out of your bud more efficiently.

Here is an easy DIY step-by-step guide to make a kief box out of materials you can find in any regular art store.

    How to consume kief

Alright, you’ve collected your kief already; now what? Here are three great ideas on how to consume kief.

    Smoke it

All you need to do is sprinkle it on top of your joint or the top of your bowl or mix it in the bud. Remember: Kief is highly concentrated; it will produce an immediate effect, so take it slow and do it in a place you feel relaxed and comfortable.

      Put it in a drink

The trichomes contained in your kief stash are still mostly in an acidic state, meaning that they will cause no psychoactive effect if you just ingest them. Sure, if you add raw kief to your coffee, hot tea, or boba drink, you’d be ingesting CBD-A and THC-A, but they will not make you high.

Cannabis must be heated in order to get high, so your kief will have to go through a process called decarboxylation. It sounds complicated, but it’s actually pretty simple: put it in the oven at 225 degrees F (107 degrees C) and bake it for about 30 minutes. When you’re done, put it in your favorite drink.

A reminder: Because cannabinoids can be absorbed sublingually or through the tissue beneath your tongue, they will hit your bloodstream quicker. Take it slow!

      Make edibles

Now that you have your decarbed kief, you can add it to any food you want: syrups, sauces, dressings, or simply sprinkling the kief on top of your favorite cookies… possibilities are endless.

Keep in mind that ingesting kief will take some time to get you high, so be patient and just wait until it kicks in.

And there you have it, all you needed to know about kief, how to collect it and consume it. What are your favorite ways to consume it? Share your ideas with us!
