How Often Should you Clean Your Pipe?

Estimated 3-minute read

Investing in a high-end smoking accessory is a phenomenal feeling, but it also comes with its responsibilities. Regular cleaning is one of them. Undoubtedly, one of the least satisfying aspects of owning a pipe or bong is the maintenance. Dirty pieces smell awful and in the hard to reach places you really really have to work at, they all get gunk up. As much as you hate to clean the bong, you still don't do it as much as you should.

As most consumers of dry herbs know, dirty pipes can really impact your smoking experience. Dirty glass pipes are disagreeable, unhygienic, foul-tasting, and may even place you at greater risk of pulmonary infection. But how often should you clean your pipe?

The right answer to this question -in case you’re a heavy consumer-  is once every one or two days. Heavy users should use fresh water at least every day or run through a cotton swab. The healthiest way for anyone else to smoke from a glass pipe is to clean it after every use and allow it to dry completely before storing it.

You have your favorite glass piece, but inevitably, it develops resin and other nasty residues. Most people don’t like a dirty pipe or bong. Worse, a dirty glass piece just doesn’t work as well as when it’s perfectly clean.

Why You Should Clean Your Pipe

A clean pipe can retain your flower's flavor. Resin and residue, in general, have a smell. Smoke gathers the residue as smoke passes through a dirty pipe and actually affects the flower's flavor. This means you wont taste the terpenes and enjoy the characteristics that usually have the premium flower. Not even the best flower in the world could survive a dirty, jammed pipe.

Moreover, when you share your pipe, as it works its way through the circle, germs will eventually cling to the stem. By maintaining it regularly, you will minimize the risk of transmitting infections such as the common cold. Think about something you use every day or every few days, for instance, your favorite coffee mug. Logically, you want to clean those things, particularly when they are something you consume out of on a daily basis. Also, a slimy biofilm can grow if you let your glass pipe go long enough without being cleaned and no one wants to inhale that. After just 22 hours, it begins to develop in your pipe. Don’t just waste  time and money or put your health at risk for being lazy.

By cleaning your pipe at least once a week the smoking experience can be significantly enhanced.

How to Know When It's Time To Clean Your Pipe

To boost your well-being and the taste of your buds, here are some key indicators that you need a shift:

  • Gunky film inside the glass pipe, similar to what you see in fish tanks after several days
  • Heavy resin buildup
  • Brown, discolored glass pipe water
  • Especially smelly water
  • White or gray mold fuzz on resin build up. This will cause you to get sick.
  • White or black spots around the pipe walls of glass or the stem. You don’t have to be an expert to realize that is not healthy.

To clean your pipe, all you need to do is rinse the piece with boiling water. For heavily used glass pipes, we recommend soaking the piece in salt and isopropyl for a night. Make sure to rinse thoroughly after removing it from the solution.
