How to Get Kief From a Grinder

After a lot of smoking sessions, maybe you have begun to see a sticky powder that gets stuck on the teeth and walls of your grinder. That powder is called kief, and the good news is that not only can you use it, but that it has more potency than the actual buds you have grinded before.

If this is the first time you hear of this powder and you want to learn how to use it, this is the guide for you. Here, we will share some tips on how to get kief from a grinder so that you can experience a whole new level of bliss thanks to its potency and benefits.

What is Kief?

Kief is the name given to all those tiny and sticky crystals that cover cannabis flowers, called resin glands. These contain the terpenes and cannabinoids that make each cannabis strain unique. While marijuana sans kief still contains cannabinoids, these resin glands that develop on flower buds pack the biggest high potency, which is why it is so important to always get a fresh and resin coated bud.

Kief is always used to make different concentrates or add to your normal joints, pipes, and bongs. For this reason, many users like to get special grinders to collect this pollen and level up their smoking game.

How to Collect Kief

A regular grinder doesn’t come with a kief catcher, making it more difficult to extract. In this type of grinder, kief gets usually stuck between the teeth and walls of the grinder. While it is still possible to collect kief from a regular grinder, the process is annoying and requires patience.

For this reason, there are other types of grinders usually called four piece grinders or kief catcher grinders. This is the standard and by far the most popular method of collecting kief. The distinction from a two -or three- piece grinder is that it will have a kief catcher chamber in the bottom, beneath a fine screen to catch the kief that falls off of your buds when shredded.

There is a way to maximize the kief extraction process from your grinder in case you don’t have a two or three piece one. Here we are going to discuss a simple you can use to get the most kief from your grinder:

Use a Coin: start by separating the kief that can be easily taken away from your grinder. Then, find a coin that will fit loosely inside the middle chamber of your grinder, where your ground weed ends up. A dime usually works best as it is small and doesn’t smell like copper. However, if you have a larger grinder, you may want to choose a heftier coin. Just make sure it has room to move around inside the grinder by giving it a slight shake. Listen to hear the coin bouncing around easily inside the grinder. In this sense, the grinder will vibrate a little more when you move it, which makes the kief separate from the wall and teeth of the grinder and fall into the kief chamber.

Cool it down: reassemble your grinder and then proceed to put it in the freezer. This will work perfectly because cannabis trichomes become more brittle when exposed to the cold, making them easier to separate from the metal of your grinder’s walls and teeth. Simply leave your assembled grinder in the freezer overnight, and by morning time, it should be in a perfect temperature for extracting that sweet kief.

Shake the grinder: now that your grinder has the coin inside and has cooled down, proceed to shake the kief out of the grinder once more. Allow the coin to bounce up around the inside of your grinder for a few minutes. If you are doing it right, the coin will hit the cold kief-covered walls of the inside of your grinder, dislodging that way the kief instantly.

Claim your crown: after you shake the grinder, your kief should be ready and separated inside. Proceed to open your grinder, remove the coin, and then see how much more kief you have in your collection chamber. If you did your job well, the inside of your grinder should look full of sticky green powder.

How to Use Kief

There are actually a variety of ways in which you can enjoy your kief. From smoking it to making hash, the possibilities are endless. In this sense, we have a few suggestions that can amplify potency and refine the consistency of your kief.

Topping Your Packed Bowl:

Also known as crowning the bowl, this is the first and most obvious use for kief. The overall potency of a hit can increase dramatically with a dusting of kief on top of your bowl. We recommend cornering your hits to get the most out of a kief-crowned bowl. By doing this, you entail burning a quadrant of the bowl at a time so that you can enjoy multiple hits.

Twax and Seasoned Joints:

Freshly ground weed is just sticky enough to make rolling a joint fairly easy. Just season your ground cannabis with a little pinch of kief and mix well. The extra trichomes should more or less stick to the ground leaves, adding potency to the interior of your joint. In addition, those who are looking for a more advanced experience can dampen the outside of their joint with a lick of their preferred wax and then roll the top three quarters of the joint in kief. This kief coated joint is often called a twaxed joint.

Kief Hash:

Hash is one of the oldest forms of refined cannabis. One of the first steps for making hash is extracting kief, as hash is basically just kief that has been heated and pressurized to form a soft green dough. Applying heat and pressure to kief changes its composition by rupturing the resin glands. Once the kief ruptures, the overall taste and effects of the product are slightly different. Pressurizing kief also darkens its color; the more pressure you apply, the darker the hash becomes.

Moon Rocks:

Moonrocks are high quality nugs covered in oil and then covered up in kief. This glittering cannabis product has an extremely high potency and a really incredible appearance. Moonrocks are relatively easy to make if you have the materials. First, gently heat your oil of choice and liberally coat your buds. Then, sprinkle the kief over the still-warm buds, or dredge buds in a kief bath using tongs. Let harden, then enjoy them by breaking them up by hand and sprinkling them into your pipe’s bowl.

Add Potency to Cannabutter:

Cannabutter has many great applications and can be enjoyed in a wide range of ways as well. Kief is an excellent and easy way to boost potency without adding any steps to the cannabutter creating process. Just remember, no matter if you decarboxylate your cannabis in the oven or in your crockpot, it is always better to make sure your kief is intermixed with your flower for best results.

Press Rosin:

This is a rising star in the world of cannabis concentrates for its solvent-less extraction methods and preservation of cannabinoids and terpenes present in the plant. Press rosin is usually done with cannabis flowers, but higher yields and potency can be achieved by pressing kief. The at-home kief press method requires a hair straightener and a vice, while professional methods incorporate high pressure presses.
