Cannabis Granola Recipe: The Complete Hippie Lifestyle

Estimated 6-minute read

When you think about the sixties, what is the first image that comes up to you? Great music, profound social changes, and a cool counterculture that still colors the popular perception of weed. And above all else, the 60s were the decade that made cannabis cool, linking it inexorably with a sense of freedom, exploration, and rebellion that many people today are still nostalgic about. The hippie, after all, is still part of the stereotypical image of the stoner, and plenty of the modern weed culture was born among those ideals of peace and love that are still cool to believe.

But what was the hippie subculture, really? Because beyond the myths and stereotypes that surround the people going against the mainstream during this decade (like the whole “free love”, or how they were all over the USA, not only in San Francisco and other coastal cities), there are plenty of fascinating stuff to be found in this period of history, and the use of cannabis is a big part of that. So, in honor of a decade that brought us so many cool things, today we want to share a recipe that will bring you back to those days (in the case you actually lived through them), or at least make you feel like a true part of the 60s hippie community.

So let’s chill for a bit, sit back and relax, and check out the recipe for one of the stereotypical staple foods of the nature-loving, healthy-eating, and environmentalist hippie that you probably have on your mind right now: granola. Granola with weed, to be exact. So let’s dig into it and live up to the culture of your stoner forefathers!

A snack for the health-conscious pothead

Just like weed and hippies, granola has a lot of history as a staple of breakfast and quick snacks for people who like a little crunch, or who want to avoid more fatty foods with a delicious and healthy alternative. Granola has been part of the traditional American diet at least since the 19th century, but thanks to the popular image of the hippie in the “rural commune”, farming and growing their own food, granola also became part of this culture.

In fact, you may even be familiar with the clichéd image of the “granola girl”, a stock character in movies and TV that is all about being “An overtly comical left-wing, anarchist-environmentalist-spiritualist character, with a penchant for tie-dyes, crystals, veganism, free love, oneness with nature and anything that is "all-natural", according to the folks at TVTropes. “This character is not very well grounded, tending to be overly cheerful and flighty but not scatter-brained enough to qualify as The Ditz. She loves alternative medicine and might refer to real doctors as "greedy allopaths," followed by an immediate apology for "being so negative. That's not like me, at all." You probably have one of such characters in mind right now.

Anyway, as you may have guessed by now, granola goes great with a little weed on it, you can choose a hybrid one (CBD + THC) or only CBD if you are just looking for a delicious and easy snack that's perfect for those moments when you want to chill by the TV, or are feeling peckish and in dire need of a little relaxation. Be sure to add the correct dose for you! Granola in general is not very hard to make, so with a few magic ingredients, you can enjoy the perfect snack for a chill afternoon watching movies, or walking around in the park before it gets too cold, you can enjoy it by itself or then prepare yourself some granola bars. So, without further ado, here are the ingredients you need to prepare your own cannabis granola, and even make granola bars to take with you anywhere you want:

Weed granola edibles (Cannabis-infused homemade granola)

What you need to have (Ingredients):

  • ½ a cup of marijuana-infused coconut oil (or just infused oil of your preference)
  • 3 cups of oatmeal
  • 1 cup of your preferred nuts
  • Your favorite berries or fruits (we suggest bananas or blueberries/ raisins or sunflowers seeds)
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • ½ cup of flaxseed meal, brown
  • 1½ teaspoons of powdered cinnamon
  • ½ cup of honey. Maple syrup can also work (if you prefer)
  • A pinch of salt

What you need to do (Steps):

First of all, make sure to preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (or about 150 degrees Celsius, for those using this metric), and prepare a baking tray with some parchment paper to bake the granola. Then, except for the salt, mix all of the dry ingredients (the oatmeal, the nuts, the flaxseed meal, and the cinnamon) and set it aside when you are done.

Once that is ready, add the cannabis-infused coconut oil, which can be prepared easily by baking your preferred strain of cannabis for an hour at 250°F (116°C), grinding it, and adding it to some coconut oil to make an infusion. Be careful with the dosages, as this method can really make the weed potent, so go easy on it. The flaxseed will help the oil to get absorbed once you mix it in, and then add the honey (or maple syrup) and the salt. At this step, you can add any extra flavoring you want, like vanilla extract, for example, but that depends on how strong your sweet tooth is.

Okay, now mix everything together nicely using a wooden spoon to give that extra rustic feeling to the whole recipe, and once it is ready, spread the granola mixture on your baking tray as much as you can. Just be careful to not press down, or you run the risk of leaving it too thin, which makes it easy to burn it.

Now put it in the oven for about 30 minutes, or until it reaches a nice golden brown hue. Check it out constantly, you don’t want to burn it, as the odor of burnt granola is not really all that pleasant. After the first 10 minutes or so, you can even take it out, spread it around a little more, and put it back again, but that’s only if you want. Leaving it alone is pretty much the best thing you can do at this point.

Once the granola has finished baking, take it out and mix the fruits you want before it cools down, adding raisins or sunflower seeds to it can be good option too. At this point, you can also shape it as bars to take with you, or let it cool as a plank of sorts and grind it down to add to your bowl of fruit at breakfast, however, you prefer your granola. And that’s it! If you did everything correctly, you will have the perfect cannabis snack for the day, with a hint of the weed flavor among the fruits and the oats.

We hope this cannabis granola is everything you want, so if you liked it, please make sure to come back to HØJ for more, we will totally have an infused granola bar recipe for you asap. Meanwhile, you can check this video to have a visual example of a "Weed Granola Bar Edibles Recipe".
