Best Video Games To Play While High

Estimated 8-minute read

I think it’s pretty fun to light up a joint and play some video games. It’s also very common, in my opinion, as we have the gamer/stoner stereotype. The high tends to make video games even more engaging and fascinating, in some cases. However, it can be hard to decide which game to play, or which games are even good or fun while stoned.

So I’ve compiled a list for you with some games that come highly recommended by fellow stoners, in no particular order. Whether you’re looking for puzzle games, or action-adventure, this list has a little bit of everything. To make things easier for you, I’ve also added the platforms in which these games are available and some prices. And just so you know, neither I nor HØJ get any money from any purchases made from the games in this list.

Minecraft

  • Genre: Sandbox
  • Platform: PC, iOS, Xbox, Wii U, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Apple TV, Android
  • Price: It depends on the console.

If you’ve spent any time online during the past few years, you’ve probably heard of Minecraft. I have to be the first to admit that I had a bit of a prejudice against this game because of the visuals it has, but I’ve come to realize that it’s a good aesthetic that fits the game’s purpose.

Minecraft is a sandbox game, which basically means that the game is pretty much created by you. This game is about crafting, exploring, building and fighting creepers. It’s fun to play while high because you’re in charge of the kind of game you want to play. Minecraft has two modes, survival or creative, which you can pick depending on your mood. What makes Minecraft great is the fact that you can unleash your creativity and build houses, skyscrapers, Star Wars robots, or anything you’d like. If you’re not feeling particularly inspired, there are also lots of online resources that you can scour through for something fun to do in the game. It also has a multiplayer mode, so that you can fight creepers with your friends or show off your amazing creations.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

  • Genre: Simulation game
  • Platform: Nintendo Switch
  • Price: 79.99 USD

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the latest game in Nintendo’s Animal Crossing series, made specifically for the Nintendo Switch. This is an amazing game, if you ask me, especially for when you’re high because of the creative aspect of it. In this game, you basically go to a deserted island with a cute tanuki family, pioneered by Tom Nook, and you have to help them transform this island into a bustling community.

There are many things that you can do in game, including fishing, catching bugs, crafting your own tools and furniture, buying rare decorations for your house and island, clothing for your character, and making friends with the cute animals that inhabit your island. You can even customize the very land in your island to make it look however you want it in the late stages of the game! The visuals for this game are incredibly adorable, and if you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can even visit your friends’ islands to check them out.

This game also has a huge online community that you can access for inspiration, trading items, and getting the best turnip exchange prices there are on the market. This is frankly one of my favorite video games. This game is good for anyone who likes to get a little creative and decorate a virtual house and an entire island, or likes to interact with cute characters and listen to some relaxing music while you’re at it.

Portal 2

  • Genre: Puzzle
  • Platform: PC, Xbox 360, Mac OS, PS3, Linux
  • Price: 10 USD

Now this is a great game for those who love putting their brain to work through puzzles, especially while high. Portal 2 is the second of its kind, in which you wake up as a character named Chell, a human subject that was experimented on by Aperture Laboratories. The main mission is to try to escape these laboratories with the help of a portal gun. This gun creates portals that let you travel between different rooms and solve the environmental puzzles this way.

This game has it all, from great and hilarious voice acting, an engaging storyline, robots and a sci-fi world to discover. It has amazing mechanics, smoother than the first Portal game, and it allows the player to feel smart by getting creative with the puzzle solving without it being too hard to be frustrating. I think this is what makes it great to play when stoned.

The game also has a co-op mode to play with friends, which is also very good, as it is engaging for both players. You can’t really solve the puzzles by yourself in this mode, so you have to communicate well with your partner to get through the stages!

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

  • Genre: Fighting
  • Platform: Nintendo Switch
  • Price: 59.99 USD

This game is a classic, known by all Nintendo fans. While fighting games definitely require some hand-eye coordination that can get impaired while heavily stoned, this game is still fun to play while high. What makes Super Smash Bros Ultimate special is the incredible roster of  74 fighters, from so many Nintendo games such as the classic Mario, or Isabelle from Animal Crossing, and even the Wii Fit Trainer. The fact that there are so many characters makes this game stand out from previous Smash iterations, so you should definitely check it out and play different characters when you’re high. It really makes for a fun time.

This game has 108 different stages, an adventure mode, and a map where you can find Spirits to level up your characters. Smash Bros Ultimate also has a multiplayer mode, so you don’t have to be fighting against the CPU all the time, and it has matches for up to 8 players. So try it out, by yourself or with friends, but definitely alongside a nicely packed bowl.

Subnautica: Below Zero

  • Genre: Open-world Survival, Action-Adventure
  • Platform: PC, MacOS, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch
  • Price: 29.99 USD

Subnautica is definitely one of the best games I’ve seen. This is an open world game, which I really love when I'm high, because you have the liberty to explore an amazing world. I find this very engaging. With Subnautica, you are playing as Robin Ayou, a scientist that smuggles herself into an alien planet to discover the mystery behind her sister’s death. This planet in particular, called 4546B, is mostly water, so you’re submerged for most of the game, scuba diving to find resources, or investigating abandoned facilities to uncover the circumstances behind the death of Robin’s sister.

The reason why I recommend this is because the visuals of this watery alien world are stunning, and combined with the sound mixing, it becomes a very immersive experience. The game also gives the player the freedom to explore this planet, and fight hostile animals in the depths, or try to be stealthy and sneak around them. The story itself is very well crafted, as well as surprising and engaging.  Though I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re afraid of the depths.

Call of Duty: Vanguard

  • Genre: First person shooter
  • Platform: PC, MacOS, XBox, Playstation, iOS, Android, Wii U.
  • Price: 59.99 or 69.99 depending on the console.

Every gamer has heard about Call of Duty, but if you haven’t played it, you might want to check it out. Vanguard is the latest of the series of video games, and it follows a special team of soldiers that are fighting in a fictionalized version of World War II. This game in specific I found very special because of their main characters, and the time that they spend fleshing out their backstory, and how they all have a different set of skills. Besides, it’s always fun to blow up Nazis.

What makes COD stand out is their incredibly realistic visuals, which are obviously fascinating when you’re stoned. And it’s action packed— you can fly planes, go on stealthy missions, blow up things, hijack trains, or go on zombie killing raids. The highlight in my opinion is the multiplayer, which allows you to pick the kind of mission you want to go on depending on your mood, whether it’s a tactical one, an assault or a blitz. I would definitely recommend this if you’re a fan of first person shooter games.

Katamari Damacy Reroll

  • Genre: Puzzle, action
  • Platform: PC, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia
  • Price: 19.99 USD

And last but not least, there is Katamari Damacy Reroll. This is a Japanese game that is very very fun and simple to play. Basically, you start rolling a huge ball that catches objects smaller to it. So as the ball gets bigger, you’re able to roll larger objects into your ball to get it to a certain size before you reach a specific time limit. I find this one to be a little absurd, but that’s part of what makes it fun and hilarious when you’re high. You may start rolling everyday objects into your chaotic ball, but end up involving structures as big as skyscrapers, and even clouds! There are also specific kinds of missions where you have to roll a set of designated objects into your ball, for those that like a bit of an amusing challenge.

The game is pretty similar to the original PS2 version, but it has a major graphics update. The design is also pretty fun and colorful, the soundtrack is catchy and the story is engaging but simple enough. I definitely recommend this if you’re in the mood for something uncomplicated, cause I know sometimes when we’re high we can get lazy, but it’s still delightful.

So what are you waiting for? Pick something within your price range, and available in your console, roll yourself a HAMP joint and get gaming! If you have any other games that you enjoy while high, feel free to leave them in the comments.
